#PowerNOW: A Conversation with Funke Baruwa, Esther Eghobamien-Mschelia, Aisha Yesufu & Harriet Thompson.

African women need more than empowerment: we need power.

In August 2018, The She Tank launched its emPOWER NOW conversation series in Abuja, with a special film screening of Suffragette and an interactive panel discussion. Directed by Sarah Gavron and written by Abi Morgan, Suffragette is inspired by the true story of women’s suffrage in Britain, and follows the foot soldiers of the early women’s movement. Following the film screening there was a cross-continental and intergenerational dialogue focused on women’s movement building in Nigeria and drawing parallels with the Suffragette movement. This event was hosted in partnership with The British Council, The British High Commission and The Latiwa Development Foundation.

Watch the panel discussion below, featuring: Harriet Thompson (Deputy British High Commissioner in Nigeria), Esther Eghobamien-Mschelia (Nigerian Representative to the UN’s CEDAW Committee), Funke Baruwa (Co-Chair, The Nigerian Women’s Trust Fund) and Aisha Yesufu (Activist, #BringBackOurGirls). This conversation was moderated by Bella Anne-Ndubuisi (Member, #NotTooYoungToRun Strategy Team).
